"Xiao Xuan’an is a “docu-conceptual” photographer from Wuhan who used to be very famous for his performance art in the early 1990’s notably about the displaced population due to Three Gorges Dam.

His new work is more contemplative: One year after the tragic earthquake of Wenchuan, Xiao went to document the damage caused to temples and historical monuments. There he found these 800 fallen Arhats – lying strewn in the wind, left to no one’s care.

Opening reception in the presence of the artist from 3–7pm. We are sorry for the sauna heat and the mess at the entrance of Building 5. Chilled beer and white wine and soft drinks will be served!"

"Human Negotiations is an independent, self-funded collaboration between photographer Katharina Hesse and writer Lara Day, exploring the lives of Bangkok sex workers through images and text. Leaving aside stereotypes of exploited, downtrodden Third World females coerced into a profession in which they are passive victims, the project reveals a more nuanced, open-ended world where women take center stage, and where reality’s complexities leave room for wider interpretations. The project takes the form of a book featuring photographs and short fiction (Three Shadows Press, June 2011) as well as a multimedia work including music by Ryuichi Sakamato. The book will be officially launched on June 25 at Three Shadows Photography Art Centre in Beijing to coincide with a solo exhibition."

"The Return of the Losers is based on economic calculations that show that the young people who grew up in the Nordic countries in the 1990s and 2000s will in general have a lower standard of living than their parents' generation. A change like that will likely force a reformulation of the Nordic welfare state. Many believe that transformation is already underway, with Sweden having lost is position at the head of the pack of welfare societies. The rest of the world seems already to have lost faith in the Nordic model as a sustainable and successful role model for welfare in the globalized world. The struggle for survival is going to be tough for many Nordic regions, cities, and individuals. The issue couldn't be more relevant, especially for the Kalmar region, with its diminishing and ageing population.

The participating artists are themselves members of the lost generation, but they have in common the fact that they don't see themselves as victims. On the contrary, they create instead their own conditions for survival in a global world. In this way, the artists contribute with their actions to the reformulation of the Nordic welfare state. In their work, the artists capture the younger generation's attitude toward the Nordic welfare state's changes in the wake of globalization-and toward its future.

The exhibition is also intended to reflect on the position of art and the artist in a time of social change and development. What is possible? Several of the participating artists have been perceived by the surrounding community as provocative. Could that be because they make their own way, refusing to resign themselves to fate? Perhaps it's precisely because these artists have touched on and questioned the foundations of the welfare society, the basis for many debates in the art world in Sweden in recent years."

Man kann kaum mit all den Festivals mithalten momentan, deshalb hier der nach Genre geordnete Auswahl-Versuch einer Auflistung. Bewogen haben mich dazu wegen persönlichen Bezugs zwei Kleinstfestivals, die dieses Wochenende und in knapp zwei Wochen stattfinden und hier entsprechend zuerst genannt werden:

Zum einen das "Sunflowers Music Festival" am 14. und 15. Mai von jeweils 14:30 bis 22 Uhr außerhalb der Stadt im Shui'an Huatian im Wasserdorf Changgou, 水岸花田湿地／水乡长沟, Eintritt 100 Kuai/ Tag, s. Huatian. Hier das blumige Plakat und auf zur Elektrobühne:



Und zum anderen das erste "International Festival of Sound Emissions" im Dos Kolegas am 24. und 25. Mai ab jeweils 21 Uhr mit Yan Jun und anderen nationalen und internationalen Gästen, s. 2 Kolegas. Hier das emissionsdurchwachsene Plakat:

21.–22. Mai: "Intro Electronic Music Festival" geht in die dritte Runde. Dieses Jahr zunächst im entlegenen Tongzhou Canal Park geplant, vermutlich in der Hoffnung, dass nicht wieder wie 2009 der Strom abgedreht wird, nun aber doch erneut im 751 D-Park. S. Acupuncture Records.



Zu den Maifeiertagen gabs wieder "Midi" und "Strawberry".

30. April – 1. Mai: "China Music Valley International Festival" im Yuyang Int'l Ski Resort, Pinggu Bezirk, s. Live Nation China (Organisator), s. Global Times für ein wenig Feedback.

Musik/ Theater

8.–16. April: "Ephemerals’ Festival", das internationale Indie-Folk Musikfestival im Yugong Yishan, Penghao Theatre, Heifang Theatre etc., s. Fuyou. Großartig war die Abschlussvorstellung mit Tao Yes Modern Dance Improvisation zu den vorab doch eher merkwürdig bis langweiligen Klängen.

Musik/ Kunst

11. März – 3. April: "Jue Festival", habe es leider nicht geschafft.

Theater

16.–22. Mai: "Beijing Dance Forward Festival", s. Beijing Dance LDTX.

10. Mai – Ende Juli: "Nanluoguxiang Theatre Festival", hier die Ankündigung in der China Daily.

22. April – Ende Mai: "Croisements Festival", s. Institut Français.

Film

1.–7. Mai: Das "Songzhuang Independent Documentary Film Festival" wurde offiziell abgesagt und fand in Miniature und Überwachung statt, s. Kommentar unter dGenerate Films.

23.–28. April: Das erste "Beijing International Film Festival", zumindest das erste offizielle lief an, wurde reich, aber wenig inhaltlich, in der Stadt beworben. Zu etlichen Vorführungen kamen scheinbar kaum Besucher, da nicht einzeln angekündigt wurde. Auch was die Anziehungskraft auf int'l Stars und Sternchen angeht, so muss sich das Festival erst einmal etablieren. S. Offizielle Homepage.

23. April – 1. Mai: "PhotoSpring 2011" der Three Shadow Gallery im Caochangdi mit reichlich interessantem Programm.


Literatur

März: Dann waren da noch die beiden Literaturfestivals vom Bookworm, 4.–18. März, und das erstmals in BJ veranstaltete "literary M" von Capital M Beijing, 26. Feb. – 6. März. Mir ging dieses Jahr die ganze Atmosphäre im Bookworm etwas gegen den Strich, das literaty M war noch recht unorganisiert, aber die Konkurrenz kann ich nur gut heißen.

Soweit erst einmal, ev. mit weiteren Updates später und zwischendurch.

Allgemein ist hier in Beijing momentan einiges los, hier nur ein paar schnelle Stichworte:

Da wäre natürlich einmal die Ausstellung zur "Kunst der Aufklärung", s. etwa Helwig Schmidt-Glintzer ursprünglich in der FAZ (15. April 2011), mittlerweile kostenpflichtig, hier im Dt.-Cn. Kulturnetz, auch auf 中文 (Mai 2011), über die zwei Lager der Sinologen und Nicht-Sinologen, etwas phrasiert und langatmig, aber ich habe auch das leidliche Gefühl, dass die Augenhöhe tatsächlich immer noch gegen Kolonialismusverblendung betont werden muss. Wunderschön der Beitrag an das Heimatvolk von Mark Siemons "Wir sind nicht gemeint" zur Verhaftung von Ai Weiwei (5. Mai 2011). Nach sechs Wochen nun ein Besuch (NY Times, 16. Mai).

Dazu bzw. zur Eröffnung des neuen, zusammengeführten Nationalmuseums die Geschichte um die Konfuziusstatue als Indiz für innerparteiliche Reibereien. Hier nur eine kleine Bildreihe:

Das erste Foto stammt von shanghaiist.com, als der Meister im Februar an der Chang'an jie vor das Museum platziert wurde; das zweite ist dieselbe Position, fotografiert knapp zwei Wochen nachdem das Idol Ende April in einer Nacht- und Nebelaktion – allerdings und wie man sieht ohne große Spurenbeseitigung – versetzt wurde; und das dritte Foto ist der neue Ort, die Abstellkammer in einer Flucht irgendwo im großformatigen Museumsgewirr (zugegebenermaßen extra schlecht und mit reflektierendem Baufahrzeug fotografiert). S. für Interpretationen etwa NY Times (dort auch ein schönes Davor-Danach-Slidebild), die dort verlinkte Diskussion wird auf Maoflag geführt.

Dann die Sache mit dem Rauchverbot seit 1. Mai. Ich wurde bislang noch nicht von der Selbstzerstörung meiner Gesundheit abgehalten. Es bleibt weiter abzuwarten, wie sich die Umsetzung entwickelt.

Dann der Raub im Palastmuseum der Verbotenen Stadt am 8. Mai, s. etwa im Guardian oder bei Mychinaviews – höchste Zeit, weitere Sicherheitsmaßnahmen einzuführen.

Allgemein die staatliche Kontrollfanatik, die nicht etwa mit Jasmin begonnen hat, sondern, so heißt es, schon Ende letzten Jahres auf die Agenda gesetzt wurde – der weiterhin anhaltende, hyperventilierende Umgang mit Gmail, Linkedin, Xing geht allerdings wohl ohne Frage auf Jasmin zurück. Die Zügel werden an so manchen Fronten fester gezurrt, so etwa die im Februar an der Beida begonnenen Studentenkontrollen – leider ohne Link, ich finde gerade nichts mehr dazu und habe die Geschichte nur noch im Augenwinkel in Erinnerung mit wer ist wie viel bzw. übermäßig im Netz, wer weicht vom allg. Verhalten ab usw. Dann die Ausländerkontrollen, die scheinbar im April in Guangzhou begonnen haben und sich im Laufe der Zeit über ganz China erstrecken sollen – Hörensagen, habe auch hier keine Quellenangabe parat. Da war und ist noch etliches mehr in dieser Richtung, hauptsächlich im Zusammenhang mit dem Netz natürlich, so komme ich etwa seit einigen Wochen nur noch mit argem Zeitaufwand auf meinen Blog – allerhöchste Zeit für einen VPN-Zugang (?).

Warum wurde in Deutschland nicht aufgeschrieen? Warum haben die Standardmedien nur wiedergekäut, was die Regierungs-PR-Maschinerie ausgespuckt hat? Achja, weil wir wissen wollen, wo neue Kita-Plätze entstehen müssen und wo unsere V-Leute wohnen. Hier die Fragebögen, es geht schon ziemlich zur Sache, neben Zuwanderungsfragen, Religionszugehörigkeit und natürlich der Angabepflicht von Adresse, Telefonnummer etc. (E-Mail fehlt), erstrecken sich allein die Fragen nach der Berufstätigkeit auf 4 Seiten, etwa: "Haben Sie auch in der Woche vom 9. bis 15. Mai mindestens eine Stunde eine bezahlte Tätigkeit ausgeübt?"; Wenn nein, "Warum … nicht?" usw.usf. Hier ein ganz netter Pro-Contra-Podcast von dradio Hintergrund (knapp 20 Min. lang).

Ach, und hier nebenbei eine Auswertung der Volkszählung 2010 in China der Jamestown Foundation (Quelle ist, darauf weist Britta hin, etwas fragwürdig mit ihrer "Information … from … the World of Terrorism"-Agenda; Link von MCLC, bislang habe ich nicht viel mehr gefunden).

Der Schweizer Künstler Yves Netzhammer präsentiert seine Arbeit "Die Anordnungsweise zweier Gegenteile bei der Erzeugung ihres Berührungsmaximums" mit audiovisueller Begleitung des Computerkünstlers Bernd Schurer im Minsheng Art Museum im Red Town in Shanghai unter dem Namen "Nature Fear Entity" – verlängert bis Ende Mai.

Himalayas art Museum is launching a call for submissions for it’s new logo design. However, the museum is not simply searching for a logo design, but for your vision for the future of the institution. What are your hopes and desires? What challenges do you think we will face?
